FAQ

What is a Life Plan Community?
The Hearthstone is a Life Plan Community that offers a combination of all care options within one location: Independent, Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Memory Care and Rehabilitation. Also called a CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community), they are owned and operated by private and/or nonprofit companies and staffed to provide a ”continuum of care” for residents. Having a plan in place – the security of the safety net provided by the availability of healthcare, coupled with the freedom from not having to manage all the day-to-day tasks that come with home ownership – allows you to live life to the fullest. Fees required often include a sizable entrance fee plus monthly fees.

What fees do I pay at the Hearthstone?
As with many nonprofit Life Plan Communities, residents of the Hearthstone pay a one-time entrance fee and a monthly fee, which vary by size of apartment and number of occupants.

What does the entrance fee cover?
The one-time entrance fee entitles residents to the exclusive right to occupy a selected apartment and to use and enjoy all the common areas, programs and amenities the Hearthstone has to offer. It also assures residents of access to all levels of care (assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation) at a more competitive rate than the average cost in the Seattle area. Perhaps, most importantly, should our residents ever outlive their assets through no fault of their own, they are eligible to apply for the Resident’s Assistance plan to supplement their income and allow them to remain at the Hearthstone.

Another advantage of a Life Plan Community is that a portion of the entrance fee and monthly fee can be considered tax deductible. You can consult your personal financial planner for details.

What does the monthly fee provide?
The monthly fee provides for all maintenance services, all utilities, cable TV, Wi-Fi, long distance phone service, biweekly housekeeping, three meals a day, full access to community amenities and programs, scheduled local transportation, 24-hour security and monitored emergency response.

Is the entrance fee refundable?
The Hearthstone offers both non-refundable and 90% refundable contract options to accommodate your financial plan for the future. The non-refundable option offers an amortization schedule across the first 4 years of residency. Our knowledgeable sales team will be happy to explain each option in detail and offer sample contracts for your review.

What happens if short-term care needs should arise?
As a resident of independent or assisted living, each person earns 1.5 days per month, up to 21 days, that can be applied towards a stay in the Health Center (our skilled nursing facility). Like “vacation days” you earn and use them as needed for short-term rehabilitation not covered by Medicare.

What types of residences are available at the Hearthstone?
The Hearthstone offers 153 independent living apartments, including Village Cove, in a range of sizes and floor plans, 36 assisted living apartments, 14 memory care apartments and 21 skilled nursing rooms (most are semiprivate) for rehabilitation and long-term care.

Do I get to choose interior finishes for my apartment?
Yes, the Hearthstone offers a variety of choices of carpeting and wall and paint colors to reflect your preferences.

Can I decorate or make additional changes to my apartment?
Yes, you are welcome to put your personal touches on your new home. Structural or physical changes or renovations must first be approved by management and is the financial responsibility of the resident. Custom renovations remain the property of the Hearthstone.

What is the process for moving to the Hearthstone?
When you are ready to take the next step, fill out our residency application (request the form via online request form or visit in person) and return it with a refundable $1,000 fee. Upon approval of your application, a deposit of 10% of the base entrance fee for your selected apartment is required to retain the apartment and schedule your move in date.

Is the monthly fee fixed or subject to change?
The monthly fee is subject to change, as it is based on the actual costs for providing services, staffing, operations and other expenses. Historically, changes have been minimal and reflect the regional cost of living increases. As a nonprofit organization, the Hearthstone is committed to serving our residents and to sound financial practices.

What is Village Cove?
Village Cove is the newest addition to the Hearthstone. It is a building that houses 28 independent living apartments. Village Cove is located one block from the Hearthstone main building. Residents at Village Cove are members of the Hearthstone and have access to all the services and amenities the Hearthstone has to offer. It is a pet-friendly, fully independent lifestyle option that includes the same security and health care options for the future.
