What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)?
As a CCRC, The Hearthstone offers independent living, plus a combination of support options within one location: assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and medical rehabilitation. The Hearthstone is operated as a nonprofit organization, which delivers both financial and security advantages. For those who like to plan for the future without having to manage the day-to-day tasks that come with home ownership, The Hearthstone may be just the place to realize your ideal retirement and live life to the fullest.
What is the nonprofit difference?
As a nonprofit, The Hearthstone uses its one-time entrance fees and ongoing monthly fees to support the operation and reinvest in programs, amenities and improvements that enrich the lifestyle of residents. No individuals or entities benefit from a successful operation; rather, the residents and future residents are the sole beneficiaries of this self-sustainable community.
There are other CCRCs (also referred to as Life Plan Communities) in the Seattle area, but The Hearthstone is the only one in the Green Lake neighborhood, literally across the street from Green Lake Park. Our location affords amazing views and access to all that’s offered in what we like to call “Nature’s Neighborhood.” Green Lake is renowned for its extraordinary walkability, amenities and proximity to downtown Seattle.
What fees do I pay at The Hearthstone?
As with many nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Communities, residents of The Hearthstone pay a one-time entrance fee and a monthly fee, which both vary by size and location of apartment and number of occupants. Once a resident, you basically have one check to cover all your regular living expenses— convenient and easy for financial planning.
What does the entrance fee cover?
The one-time entrance fee entitles residents to the exclusive right to occupy a select apartment and to use and enjoy all the common areas, programs and amenities The Hearthstone has to offer. It also assures residents of access to all levels of care (assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation) at 10% off the market rate, plus up to 60 complimentary days in the Health Center. Perhaps most importantly, should our residents ever outlive their assets through no fault of their own, they are eligible to apply for the Resident’s Assistance plan to supplement their income and allow them to remain at The Hearthstone. Another advantage is that a portion of the entrance fee and monthly fee can be considered tax deductible. You should consult your personal financial planner for details.
What does the monthly fee provide?
The monthly fee provides for all utilities, cable TV, Wi-Fi, long-distance phone service, twice-monthly housekeeping, chef-prepared meals, flexible meal plan, maintenance services, full access to community amenities and programs, scheduled local transportation, 24-hour security and monitored emergency response.
Is the entrance fee refundable?
The Hearthstone offers both non-refundable and refundable contract options to accommodate your financial plan for the future. The non-refundable option offers an amortization schedule across the first four years of residency. Our sales team will be happy to explain each option in detail and offer sample contracts for your review.
Is the monthly fee fixed or subject to change?
The monthly fee is subject to change, as it is based on the actual costs for providing services, staffing, operations and other expenses. Historically, changes have been minimal and reflect regional cost of living increases. As a nonprofit organization, The Hearthstone is committed to serving our residents and to sound financial practices.
What happens if short-term care needs should arise?
As a resident of independent or assisted living, each person earns up to 60 complimentary days that can be applied toward a stay in the Health Center (our skilled nursing facility). These days can be used as needed for short-term rehabilitation not covered by Medicare.
Can I decorate or make additional changes to my apartment?
Yes, you are welcome to put your personal touches on your new home. Structural or physical changes or renovations must first be approved by management and are the financial responsibility of the resident. Custom renovations will remain the property of The Hearthstone.
How do I know which living option at The Hearthstone is right for my situation?
The Hearthstone’s Lakeside building focuses on the social community of our residents, providing activities and trips, restaurant-style dining and amenities such as our library and woodshop. The Lakeside building additionally houses all of our health services, including assisted living and memory care residences, plus skilled nursing suites for those with temporary or ongoing complex care needs.
Cove East and West are smaller complexes adjacent to the Lakeside building that offer more private, independent living in the heart of the Green Lake neighborhood. Care services are provided on The Hearthstone campus for Cove residents should the need arise.
When is the right time to consider a move to The Hearthstone?
Right now! The best time to begin planning for a secure future is the present. Plus, there are exciting updates underway to create an even more desirable living environment.
What is the process for moving to The Hearthstone?
If you are considering a move, contact our sales department for a private showing of currently available apartments. Then, when you are ready to take the next step, simply fill out a residency application and return it with a 100% refundable $1,000 fee. Upon approval of your application, a deposit of 10% of the base entrance fee for your selected apartment is required to retain the apartment and schedule your move-in date.
Do I have to live at Hearthstone to become an Assisted Living resident?
We are now accepting direct admissions into Assisted Living.
I say, “The Hearthstone is a Special Place to live.” Yes! I moved to Hearthstone about a year ago. Before ‘life’s restrictions’ and masks I enjoyed new friends in the dining room, common area presentations and activities, walks around Green Lake. During the COVID period of seclusion the staff has been most caring of us; ‘Heroes’ we call them. I felt safe from the beginning. I can still walk Green Lake or visit the Wellness Center five days a week to exercise on high-tech equipment (with masks and a limited number of exercisers). And, massages are again offered. I’m happy I made the decision to move to Hearthstone when I did!
A Disneyland for Seniors” was my initial description for family and friends of my transition to the Hearthstone. I so enjoyed the dining, activities (especially ping-pong), exercise and access to Green Lake Nature walks. That all came to a halt in March ‘20 with the arrival of Covid-19. Now I am grateful to be cocooned as a “bird in a gilded cage” to wait out this pandemic. A monthly newsletter “the Spark” with educational articles and enriching life stories leaves me humbled to be neighbors with such special folks. Hearthstone even has two centurion residents as role models!
My move into the Hearthstone’s Cove West, just over a year ago, was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My criteria for the decision included; a facility with a continuum of care, flat terrain for walking, located in or near a vibrant community, and, of course, value. All my criteria was met at the Hearthstone in the Green Lake Neighborhood, with the added plus pleasant, welcoming neighbors and a staff ready to assist me in any way. I definitely made the right decision.
Selecting a place to spend your final years is a difficult, and very private, decision. My wife and I moved into The Hearthstone about a month before the pandemic shutdown. And after several months of living here under shutdown conditions we are so pleased with our choice. We have felt very safe, comfortable, and well looked after. Though we've not been able to establish new social relationships the way we would ordinarily do, we have enjoyed sharing the experience with our new acquaintances.
The transition to my new home has been seamless. The residents and staff have been welcoming and helpful all along the way and I have appreciated how light and open it feels here at Hearthstone.
Since moving into Cove East, over 7 months ago, we can now say that we love our new home. That being said, we can’t say that it has been easy. The corona virus has presented us all with challenges. BUT, we are so glad to be living in this community of like-minded neighbors. Even though we only know each other with masks, we have found everyone at Cove East to be friendly and caring. We are all anxious for the day when we will be able to socialize in person. I know we are all looking forward to a more normal life.
