Spirituality at The Hearthstone

I am often asked about my role as The Hearthstone’s Chaplain. As a called and ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, I serve the Hearthstone community, staff and residents, people of all faiths—and no faith at all. The goal is for everyone to find acceptance, belonging and to feel connected whether they’re deeply religious, spiritual but not religious, or neither. My presence helps residents maintain spiritual continuity, whether through connections to external faith leaders or by offering spiritual and other supportive resources within the community.

My service to the community includes a regular Sunday night Vespers service, recognition of significant religious holidays and presiding over memorial services. I also lead support groups such as Bible study and grief group and host other activities–such as book club–to promote a sense of community and belonging.

I engage with our residents over meals, in one-on-one, confidential conversations, and during prayer or meditation. I help residents explore beliefs and find meaning in their religious or secular lives. In addition, I work closely with the families of Hearthstone residents—who are important members of our extended community—guiding them on spiritual matters and providing support in times of grief or other family crises.
